Contents
Quadrivalent flu vaccine (split virion, inactivated)
Indications/Uses
Active immunization of childn & adolescents from 6 mth, adult w/ high risk factor (>18 yr), & elderly (>60 yr) for the prevention of flu disease caused by flu virus types A & B contained in the vaccine.
Dosage/Direction for Use
IM 0.5 mL single inj in deltoid muscle or anterolateral thigh. Childn 6 mth to <9 yr who have not previously been vaccinated against flu Administer 2nd dose of 0.5 mL after at least a 4 wk interval.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity after previous inj of Fluarix Tetra or flu vaccines or to any component of the vaccine.
Special Precautions
Not to be administered intravascularly. Appropriate medical treatment & supervision should always be readily available in case of an anaphylactic event following administration. Postpone vaccination in patients suffering from acute severe febrile illness. Adequate immune response may not be elicited in patients receiving immunosuppressants or w/ immunodeficiency. Not effective against all possible strains of flu virus. Protective immune response may not be elicited in all vaccinees. Individuals w/ thrombocytopenia or any coagulation disorder as bleeding may occur w/ IM administration. Syncope (fainting) can occur following or even before any vaccination as a psychogenic response to the needle inj. Increased risk of redeveloping Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in patients w/ history of GBS w/ an onset w/in 6 wk of flu vaccination if flu vaccine is given. Pregnancy & lactation. Childn <6 mth.
Adverse Reactions
Inj site pain, redness, swelling. Fever. Adults & childn 6 to <18 yr: Myalgia; fatigue. Headache; GI symptoms eg, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain; arthralgia; shivering. Adults & childn 3 to <18 yr: Inj site induration. Adults: Sweating. Childn 6 mth to <6 yr: Loss of appetite; irritability/fussiness; drowsiness.
Drug Interactions
Always administer at different inj sites if to be given at the same time as another injectable vaccine. False +ve ELISA serologic tests for HIV-1, hepatitis C & HTLV-1 may occur.
